Welcome to the Lerna, the first online course marketplace providing students with monetary rewards. We at Lerna LLC (“Lerna”, “we”, “us”) want to make sure you get all the information you need to ensure your data is safe with us. This Privacy Policy describes how your personal information is collected, used, and shared when you visit or make a purchase from https://www.golerna.com (the “Site”). Any use of the Lerna website, application, APIs or mobile apps shall be referred to as “Services” for the purposes of this Privacy Policy.

By using Lerna, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy. You shouldn’t use the site if you don’t agree with this Privacy Policy or any other agreement that governs your use of the the site.


We collect both automatic data and data provided by you when using the Site. Most automatic data collection occurs through the following technologies:

– “Cookies” are data files that are placed on your device or computer and often include an anonymous unique identifier. For more information about cookies, and how to disable cookies, visit http://www.allaboutcookies.org.
– “Log files” track actions occurring on the Site, and collect data including your IP address, browser type, Internet service provider, referring/exit pages, and date/time stamps.
– “Web beacons,” “tags,” and “pixels” are electronic files used to record information about how you browse the Site.

Automatic Data Collection

When you visit the Site, we automatically collect certain information about your device, including:

  • Technical information about your web browser, device type, IP address, time zone, operating system, browser and browser language and some of the cookies that are installed on your device.
  • As you browse the Site, we collect information about the individual web pages or courses that you view, what websites or search terms referred you to the Site, and information about how you interact with the Site. The interaction details may include time spent on pages, links clicked, pages visited, features used, date and time information.
  • Your approximate geographic data like country and city, based on your IP address.

We refer to this automatically-collected information as “Device Information.”

Additionally when you interact with the Site in order to purchase a course or put a course up for sale, we collect certain information from you, including your name, payment information (including credit card numbers), and email address. We refer to this information as “Account Information.”

When we talk about “Personal Information” in this Privacy Policy, we are talking both about Device Information and Account Information.

Please note that we do not alter our Site’s data collection and use practices when we see a Do Not Track signal from your browser.

Data Provided by You

While using the Site, you may be prompted for information to log in and to use the Services provided to you. The data we collect and store may include the following:

Student Account Data: In order to use the web application to full capacity and enroll in a course, you will need to create a personal user account. The account data we collect includes your full name, your email address and a password you create.

If you connect to the Services using other third-party means, such as a social media account like Facebook or through Google, we ask for permission to access certain information. This information may include your account ID number, your login email address, gender, birthday and a list of friends.  The third-party APIs make this information available to us and the information we receive all depends on your own privacy settings with the platform.

Instructor Account Data: In order to apply as an instructor, you will be required to complete an application form which may ask for your full name, email address, password, your website, and a brief bio you craft.

Student Course Data: If you choose to purchase and take a course, we collect your course information data which includes homework assignments you submit to satisfy course requirements.

Instructor Account Data: If you upload a course to sell on Lerna, we collect course-specific content such as your videos, course worksheets and any accompanying documentation related to the course.

Student Payment Data: The payment information you provide on the Service’s website is passed on to Stripe, a third-party payment processor. This information includes your name, card number, expiration date, CVC code and zip code.

This information is received and stored directly by Stripe and is never in our possession. You can view Stripe’s privacy policy at https://stripe.com/us/privacy.

Instructor Payment Data: In order to receive payouts for course sales, you will need to connect directly to a Stripe account. You may need to provide your full name, address, bank account number, and/or debit card information. We collect data on your payout amount but all other information is received and stored directly by Stripe and is never in our possession. Promotions: If you participate in any promotions we run, such as a contest or a sweepstakes, either through the Site or a third-party platform, we collect any data you provide as part of the participation terms. This data may include your name, email address, or date of birth.

The data we collect through this means is subject to this Privacy Policy unless otherwise stated in the official rules of the promotion. The data will be used for administrative purposes, such as to notify the winner.


We use the data that we collect generally to fulfill any operational duties to you. These include:

  • Processing your orders of any courses which you may have purchased;
  • Displaying customized content based on your interests;
  • Managing your account;
  • Communicate with you by:
    • Responding to any questions you may have;
    • Sending you administrative account information, such as notifications that students have submitted homework, that a course has been purchased, a payment processed or a balance in your account;
    • Sending you information about new courses, new features, course rewards, newsletters, promotions, and newsletters (which you may opt out of);
  • Screen the orders for potential risk or fraud and secure the Services, preventing any fraud and abuse;
  • Market and administer surveys as well as solicit feedback;
  • Learn more about you by analyzing third-party analytics providers like Google Analytics;
  • Tailor advertisements;
  • Analyze traffic, purchase and usage data.

We use the Device Information that we collect to help us screen for potential risk and fraud (in particular, your IP address), and more generally to improve and optimize our Site (for example, by generating analytics about how our customers browse and interact with the Site, and to assess the success of our marketing and advertising campaigns).


We share your Personal Information with third parties to help us use your Personal Information, as described above. For example, we use Stripe to power our online store and process payments.

Finally, we may also share your Personal Information to comply with applicable laws and regulations, to respond to a subpoena, search warrant or other lawful request for information we receive, or to otherwise protect our rights.

Specific sharing of your information described in this Privacy Policy may happen under the following circumstances:

With Your Course Instructors

When you enroll in a specific course, we share your name and email address with your instructor in order to better assist them in evaluating your coursework and improve the course for you. 

With Service Providers and Contractors

We share your data with third-party companies who perform services on the Site, including payment processing, data analysis, marketing, email and hosting. No third-party service provider may use your information without explicit direction in order to provide a requested service.

With Data and Analytics Services

We use third-party analytics tools like Google Analytics and Fullstory, which require certain Device Information and Account Information in addition to the usage data and system data outlined in Section 1. This data does not contain any sensitive information like your name or email address. Instead the data is presented behind a depersonalized ID. 

With Social Media Providers

Social media features such as a pin button or a Facebook like or share may allow the third-party social media network to collect information like your IP address and page visitation details. Your interactions are governed by the third-party company’s privacy policy in those cases.

With Advertisers

If, at some point, we decide to partner with an advertiser, we may share generalized information such as Device Information in order to show demographics and preferences of the userbase on the Site. Advertisers may utilize data collection methods to garner more information and better tailor personalized ads. You may opt out of advertiser data collections at any point (see Section 5) and will only receive untailored, generic ads.

In Cases of Security and Legal Compliance

Your data may be disclosed if we have a good faith belief that the disclosure is:

  • Required by law;
  • Requested as part of a legal inquiry or order;
  • Necessary part of a subpoena or other legal request;
  • Necessary to enforce our Privacy Policy, Terms of Use and Instructor Agreement;

With Your Permission

We may share your data with third-parties outside the scope of this Privacy Policy with your consent.


Use of Your Data

You may choose not to provide certain data to us as long as you understand you may not be able to fully use the Services.

You may opt out of promotional communications by directly clicking Unsubscribe in the email you receive. You may also send us a message at hey@golerna.com or by using the Contact Us page. You will still receive transactional emails, such as order confirmations, important updates related to the Site and important information related to your orders and courses, such as homework completion notices and cash back notifications.

Your browser or device may allow you to control your cookies, information you share, or location.

As described above, we use your Personal Information to provide you with targeted advertisements or marketing communications we believe may be of interest to you. If you are a European resident, you have the right to access personal information we hold about you and to ask that your personal information be corrected, updated, or deleted. If you would like to exercise this right, please contact us through the contact information below.

Additionally, if you are a European resident we note that we are processing your information in order to fulfill contracts we might have with you (for example if you make an order through the Site), or otherwise to pursue our legitimate business interests listed above. Additionally, please note that your information will be transferred outside of Europe, including to Canada and the United States. Because Lerna LLC is headquartered in New York, we must transfer your data to the United States for processing. 


When you place an order through the Site, we will maintain your Order Information for our records unless and until you ask us to delete this information.


We do not knowingly solicit information from or market to children under the age of 13. If you become aware of any data we have collected from children under age 13, please contact us using the contact information provided below.


We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time in order to reflect, for example, changes to our practices or for other operational, legal or regulatory reasons.

If you continue using the Services after the effective date of any change, the use will be deemed as acceptance of any revisions or addendums to this policy.
